About Us: ITL on Public TV![]() Since our first broadcast on the now defunct WNYC in June 1992, IN THE LIFE has been a essential tool for informing LGBT citizens, educating the broader public, and a vital contributor to the national dialogue on LGBT issues.
While IN THE LIFE began as a variety show, it quickly turned into a half-hour news program and then grew to what it is today: a program that takes an in-depth look at the people, issues, and policies that are shaping the gay experience. Beginning with 6 stations broadcasting our first episode, IN THE LIFE has steadily grown in its reach and impact. In 2001, IN THE LIFE went monthly. (It had previously been bimonthly.)
Today, IN THE LIFE is seen on more than 246 analog and digital stations in the United States and Canada, reaching more than 75 million households. Presented by WNET/Thirteen, IN THE LIFE is aired, in all top 20 markets, including New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and Los Angeles, as well as "red states" like North Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas, Georgia, and Missouri.
Since 1992, IN THE LIFE has been the only network series documenting the LGBT experience. Although we air on 68% of public television stations across the country, being relegated to timeslots in the wee hours of the morning and/or being aired inconsistently remains a problem. And, as hard as we've tried, there remain nearly 100 channels reaching more than 30 million households in 13 states, that refuse to air IN THE LIFE at all.
You have the power to put the faces of the LGBT community and our allies on every television in America. Visit our Get IN THE LIFE page to learn how you can become an on-the-ground activist.
My sister and I watched avidly as the last edition of IN THE LIFE was broadcast at midnight on WITF-Harrisburg PA. I think it was one of the best I've seen! You have the knack of getting beyond generalities and deal in real substance. Our eyes were glued to the set and caught every nuance. - Michael
I saw your show last night on AlaskaOne - the Alaska public TV station. It featured stories about how the 'two mom family' was excluded by the children's show and about the 20/20 show that totally twisted around the hate-crime in Wyoming. Not only did I learn important news stories about how GLBT folks are stereotyped in the media, and discriminated against by the current regime in D.C., but also I was delighted to enjoy simply outstanding journalism that's hard to find anywhere these days. - Megan
