Defying Stereotypes

July 2010 (00:26:13)

The lack of fair and accurate representations of LGBT people is arguably one of the leading causes of homophobia. One way to eradicate homophobia is to counter stereotypes with positive gay images that raise awareness and reflect the diversity of our communities. This July, IN THE LIFE features lesbian "voluntouristas" who bring positive visibility and lend a helping hand to local communities in the Caribbean, and rappers who use their words and images to change hearts and minds within the music industry.

Rap music has a reputation that has evolved into a stereotype - that it promotes violence, objectifies women, and is homophobic. But there are pioneers emerging, a new generation of rappers like Shorty Roc and KIN, who are countering that image head-on, and demonstrating that "one love" includes everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a podcast?

"Podcasting" is a combination of the words "iPod" and "Broadcasting". It is a method of distributing files over the Internet for playback on computers or portable devices (such as iPods). Although many podcasts only include audio files, IN THE LIFE's podcasts are video files.

How do I use a podcast?

These files should download directly into iTunes on your computer. The videos can then be viewed directly on your computer, or transfered to a portable device with video capabilities.

What if I don't have iTunes on my computer?

You can download iTunes free from Apple.

How long will the podcast download take?

Because these podcasts include full-length video files, they may take a while to download. Depending on your connection speed, they may take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours.

Will the podcast update automatically when a new episode is available?

If you have iTunes (version 4.9 or later), you can use it to subscribe to any podcast channel, and all past, present, and future audio files in that channel will be automatically downloaded to your computer (and to your iPod, when you connect it). To do this, simply select the "Subscribe to Podcast" option from the "Advanced" menu in iTunes.

What if my firewall prevents the files from downloading?

Be sure to make an exception in your firewall to allow file transfer from www.inthelifetv.org.
